Running In The Cold
The street lights are out on my block and it’s just warm enough that the rain doesn’t turn to snow as it falls. I’m running in the cold. Sarah says she just puts her game face on and goes. That’s what she’s doing in this photo. Game face: ON. She’s like an aviator’ed Troy Polamalu and the cold outdoors is about to get sacked. I’m not there yet....

A Story
There once lived a woman who thought such dark things that the townspeople locked her in a drum so their crops wouldn’t perish for lack of light. Many years passed and one day a cantankerous old man named George Pickle unlocked the drum and set the woman free.  Much to the townspeople’s surprise, for they’d all grown decrepit with age, the woman was still strikingly pretty...

Getting High & iPhones
The only thing I miss about the iPhone is Instagram. There’s something immediately satisfying about experiencing a moment of silence on the Highline by yourself then sharing it with 5,000 people. Somehow I’d connected with enough people of the right sort that there was always somebody around and ready to share a moment with me. It’s magic of a digital nature. A social rush. I...

On Beer, Cigars And Facial Hair
I’m not categorically attracted to any of the three. Yet December found me knee-deep in a combination of them all. That’s what happens when you announce to yourself that it’s time for a change of pace.  Two months have passed and I’m liking the way things are. I didn’t think I’d end up as isolated as I did but it was worth it. Choices and accidents make a...

Mina vänner är trevliga
When I was 11 years old I had a book and tapes from which I learned how to say lots of kid-friendly phrases in different languages. One was “my friends are nice” and I remember thinking of all the kids all over the world, particularly kids in Sweden, who used that phrase and hoped someday a few of them might say that and include me in their group of nice friends.  Turns out I was...

Affirmation
I got some today. From somebody with very high expectations who has never had time for excuses or stories. Just facts.  And the facts today aligned to say I’d done my best and this time my best was enough. I’m glowing. Not literally, but inside. The sort of glow that sneaks out as random grins.  Those are likely two of the most personal sentences I’ve ever hit publish after...

Forgetfulness and the agony of fake breasts
I probably shouldn’t write this. Blame the absinthe, right? Of course, I’m kidding. Proceed. I had a friend. She was beautiful but she wanted to be something different. A deal struck with a relative that traded superb grades for surgery landed her in bed, chest wrapped in bandages, changed.  I hadn’t thought of her until recently when I sat across from a stunning creature...

Sounds
The urge to sit down and write has, so far, escaped me. That’s okay. I have time, you see. For once, I have time.  I have all these stories and emotions and bits of knowledge all in a heap inside and between listening to music like this (http://www.thesixtyone.com/s/NMNVm8n0IvS/) and miles upon miles of running and biking and swimming and random things my trainer comes up with for me to do,...

A time for wearing
Skies over Boston are bursting. Raindrops smash vigorously onto the pavement. It’s cold, friends. It’s a time for wearing things. Cashmere hoodies. Corduroy pants in seemingly accidental colors. Leather boots. Perhaps a hat if you’re one of the people who looks good in hats.

Isaiah knew what was up
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. That’s such a big promise stated so very simply. I like this song. I miss being needed for no particular, tangible reason.

There’s something about seeing words on paper and knowing you told them where to stand holding hands with spaces, punctuation trying, inspiring drama so they’ll turn the page if you’re lucky.

Guarded vocabulary
When I was in high school I got it into my head that I needed to learn as many words as possible. I’d get up early and sit with a dictionary at the dining room table. A cup of tea on one side. A 3x5 card on the other. I’d sip tea and look for words I didn’t know to fill up the card. I’d take it with me and look it over during the day. I learned a lot of words. Then I...

When I am dead, and over me bright April Shakes out her rain drenched hair, Tho you should lean above me broken hearted, I shall not care. For I shall have peace. As leafey trees are peaceful When rain bends down the bough. And I shall be more silent and cold hearted Than you are now. Sara Teasdale, 1933

A proposition
If I paid for your ticket and you boarded a plane, sipping Diet Coke and reading a book for a few hours wouldn’t be too different from any other Friday evening. Once you arrived we could go to the diner you like so much and listen to whatever the juke box decides to play in return for your Alaska quarter. Maybe when our food arrived you’d steal some of my fries and when I frowned...

I love you like Audrey Hepburn
Love can be something nearer to pure than we allow it. At least, I think it can. I wanted to say “I love you” to somebody earlier today but realized I couldn’t because we’ve all applied so much to that phrase that there’s no way to say it without some sort of qualifier. I love you, but not in a romantic way. That sounds like an insult. I love you, and I know I...

Swimming in music
If I ever have a pool, which I would like very much, I’ll install speakers in the walls and lie at the bottom with a scuba tank like some zen crocodile and stare up at the flickering light and listen to music. Music like this: Acis Veras.  Image is by Greg Robbins. It captures the feeling of looking through water pretty well.

Obrigado It’s such a pretty way to say thank you.  I once knew a Portuguese woman who used it on occasion. She was beautiful, selfish, hilarious, and she really truly liked me. That went both ways. But just for a summer. It was one of those experiences that left memories so good all the scratches healed without a scar to be found.  Isn’t that odd?  Anyhow. Obrigado is a great...

If we talked on trains
What would happen if we all decided to start talking to each other on trains? Instead of the quiet awkwardness of the morning commute, we could treat it like a speed dating session but with nothing more than pleasant human interaction in view.  We’d talk to the quiet old man sitting beside us. We’d say hello to the tall woman wearing all black standing near the door. We’d ask...
